Candidate Qualifications

Interested in running for public office in 2021? To become a candidate on the ballot, you must:

  • be a registered voter in the district
  • meet the qualifications for the office at the time of filing
  • follow the steps below

Steps to Become a Candidate

1. Choose an Office

Research open positions to see which office(s) you qualify for, who is currently in office, what the officials do, and how much it costs to file. Candidates may file for only one office.

Begin with the 2021 Candidate Guide.

2. Declare Your Candidacy (within two weeks of starting campaign)

Once you publicly announce your candidacy or organize a campaign committee, you have two weeks to make a formal declaration of candidacy with the Public Disclosure Commission (PDC)

3. File for Office and Pay Any Filing Fees (May 17-21)

Now that you know which office you are running for, you must file for office during filing week, May 17-21. This activity is done online and places your name on the ballot.

(active from 9 a.m. May 17 through 4 p.m. May 21)

Filings will be approved during business hours. Online filing is preferred. See the Candidate Guide for alternate filing methods.

4. Submit Your Candidate Statement (by May 28)

Let voters know about you and your qualifications by submitting a candidate statement and photo to be published in the local voters' pamphlet. A submission link will be sent via email once your filing has been approved.
