Downtown Construction - 271st Street NW
Building a Stronger, Safer and More Connected Downtown
The City of Stanwood is taking an important step in revitalizing downtown. As part of the broader Twin City Mile Revitalization Project, construction is happening on 271st Street NW at the 88th Ave NW Intersection and Midblock Crossing to build a safer more vibrant and connected downtown.
While the city works to improve crosswalks, roads, lighting and sidewalks, local businesses need your support more than ever. Make downtown Stanwood a daily destination of choice and shop, eat and explore local. #TogetherForStanwood
This project focuses on smart, safety-first upgrades that will make downtown easier to navigate and more enjoyable for everyone. Key improvements include:
- Curb extensions (bulb-outs) to slow vehicle speed and shorten crossing distances.
- Bricked crosswalks and pavers for safer, more visible pedestrian areas
- Overhead and inground lighting to improve nighttime safety
- Extended curb ramps for better pedestrian safety
- Planters and sidewalk enhancements to create a more welcoming streetscape
- Complete repaving and restriping of downtown to address wear
- This phase of work is projected to be complete by mid to late November.
- Crews are working a 4/10 schedule to help limit impacts on weekends.
- 271st is expected to remain open a majority of the project with some short-term single-lane closures and one full-lane closure at the end of the project for paving and striping.
- Downtown businesses are open during construction.
This phase of 271st Street NW construction is funded by an $817,488 Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) grant awarded by Washington State. An additional $144,262 is being funded with local dollars.
This isn't just construction-it's progress with purpose. These improvements are part of a several-year-long effort to:
✅Make downtown safer
✅Support local businesses by making downtown more walkable and welcoming
✅Create a cohesive, destination-worthy community hub that reflects the spirit of Stanwood
We understand that construction can be disruptive in the short-term and are doing everything we can to limit the impact. Thank you for your support and patience as we work to build a better future, together!
84th Ave NW and Cedarhome Drive Intersections
We're exploring ways to improve safety and traffic flow at two key intersections- 84th Ave NW at 271st Street NW and the four-way intersection on Cedarhome Drive (near the veterinary clinic). Design concepts are in progress this year and construction could begin as soon as next year, depending on funding.
Depot Park
The city recently worked with the Department of Ecology to clean up a contaminated site located near Bleached Society Salon. The site will be transformed into a welcoming plaza where community members can gather, relax and enjoy events. Construction of the park may start as soon as next year.
West-End Brick Road and Stanwood Middle School
Future phases of the Twin City Mile will focus on:
✅Preserving and enhancing the historic Brick Road
✅Making improvements near Stanwood Middle School
Once complete, these projects will create a vibrant, walkable and fully connected downtown that stretches from east to west-bringing the full vision of the Twin City Mile to life.
